Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research

The Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research is home to Columbia University’s Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program hub, and is one of over 50 medical research institutions across the nation that work together to speed the translation of research discovery into improved patient care. The CTSA hubs help to identify and overcome scientific and organizational barriers that slow the movement of discoveries from the lab bench to the patient bedside. Their investigators, staff, and community partners offer helpful resources such as funding mechanisms, training, research cores, and scientific tools.

CUIMC Research Cores and Shared Facilities

Shared research facilities maintain critical, high-end instrumentation and research infrastructure for investigator laboratories across CUIMC. These include:

  • 21 Institutional Cores that provide scientific services to all Columbia researchers and external partners.
  • 38 Departmental Resources that provide more technically specialized or limited-access services.
  • iLAB, which is the Core Facilities management system that allows researchers to reserve time on equipment or submit service requests to the core, along with centralized billing for core services.

Freezer Monitoring

Remote freezer monitoring systems alert laboratory personnel if freezers require immediate attention due to failure or loss of power. A preferred remote, wireless freezer monitoring solution has been identified with discounted pricing and CUIMC IT approval. The VP&S Office for Research works with CUIMC IT to ensure the security and overall reliability of the preferred monitoring system.

High-Performance Computing (HPC)

The Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (C2B2) manages a large Research Computing and Data Storage (RCD) computing infrastructure that includes a modern Data Center with a High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster, managed by systems engineers from CUIMC IT. The HPC cluster was dramatically upgraded in q3 2024 to stay current with modern RCD standards.

InfoEd

CUIT’s Research Services team manages and administers several modules of the InfoEd Grant Management application, a service that assists Sponsored Project Administrators (SPA) to move efficiently through each part of the grant and contract process from proposal to post award management.

The Pharos system manages printers, copiers, and scanners located in many common areas of the CUIMC campus, and is primarily used by students.
